Cable Sizing to be selected based upon many factors, some of
these are:
1. Total connected load to be considered with 25% spare
and maximum demand current in AMPS to be calculated. This
will be maximum ampacity.
2. Derating factors such as length of cable to be laid,
Type of installation of cable in medium ( In air, Duct,
Directly buried in earth).
3. Thermal resisivity of soil at 2.5 deg C/m, correction
factor for cables, no of cables laid.

in addition to above answer i think distance upto which
cable has to csrry the power and also atmospheric condition
of the site at where the cable will be installed is also a
very important factor.

We all have seen transmission and Distribution lines In transmission lines the voltage is high and current is low(to reduce I^2r loss) and in distribution lines voltage is low but current is high however the size of transmission wires is bigger than that of distribution wires even though the amount of current carried by the distribution lines is more than that of transmission lines why?
