Answer / victorvgp
It's one of the braking type of motors.
when the supply is cutt off for a running motor, it
still continue running due to inertia. In order to stop it
quickly we place a load(resitor) across the armature
winding. so that back e.m.f voltage is made to apply across
the resistor and due to load the motor stops quickly.
This type of breaking is called as "Regenerative
Breaking"

The above mentioned answer is almost right. but missed one
main point. if we want to perform the regenerative breaking
the motor should have maintained continuous field
supply.only disconnects the main supply,

As per my knowledge the above mentioned is DYNAMIC BRAKING.
The Regerating braking is the speed of a motor is increased
upto or above to the top speed. And suddenly disconnect
the supply to motor. So, the motor is act as a generator
and the generated supply opposing the main supply. So, the
motor is tried to rotate in opposite direction. So it will
be stopped suddenly.

This term basicly consert with traction moters and it is
one of the method used for braking traction locomotive. In
regenerative braking the DC moter is made to work as DC
generator by reversing the field winding without
disconnecting the motor from supply. this result into
braking action and motor slows down.
