all have answered wrong, they have replyed about l2 switches
but the answer is not that
i donot know i am wright or not so plz mark if i am wrong
or wright
now i am going to starting what is l3 switch
l-3 switch is that wich work on the l-3
wha does it mean.that mean that unlike l-2 switch l-3
switch can understand ip address
Layer 3 switching refers to a class of high-performance
routers optimized for the campus LAN or
intranet, providing both wirespeed Ethernet routing and
switching services
A Layer 3 switch router performs the following three major
functions:
• Packet switching
• Route processing
• Intelligent network services
Compared to other routers, Layer 3 switch routers process
more packets faster by using
application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) hardware
instead of microprocessor-based engines.
Layer 3 switch routers also improve network performance
with two software functions—route
processing and intelligent network services.
then why we chose the router rather then l-3 switches.
so answer is that l-3 switch act on fast ethernet as
gigabyte ehternet, and another region is it having
router+switches feature both which create broadcast strom
per intrface, thus in the parctise swe choose router rather
then l-3 switch
and cost have also matter.

Router is the software device it depend on the cpu power
cycle but Switches are hardware device so the performance
of the switches are much more faster than the router.
