A car averages 55 mph for the first 4 hours of a trip and
averages 70 mph for each additional hour. The average speed
for the entire trip was 60 mph. How many hours long is the trip?

Answer / name
assume the no of additional hours be 'x'. then total
distance is given by
55*4+70*x = 60(4+x)
which on solving, gives x=2.
which gives the total hours travelled to be 6 hours.
i think this is correct. not sure........

Answer / aprameya
avg speed = (total distance)/total time)
60 = (55 + 55 + 55 + 55 + 70n)/(4 + n)
where n = number of hours after 4 hours..
v get n = 2.. => total duration is 2hrs + 4hrs = 6hrs

It's very simple
When we calculate we will find that
55*4=220
and
also
70*2=140
and as question said that the average speed is 60 so
220+140=360/6=60 that's it
No other option is satisfying the average speed condition.

we have
(55*4+70*x)/(4+x)=60
by trial and error method,
put x=1,x=2,........
ans=2

Answer / shyam
avg speed = (total distance)/(total time)
car first travels 4hrs.. let us assume it travels for nhrs
after 4 hrs.. So it keeps up an avg speed of 70mph for n hrs
hence 60 = (55+70n)/(4+n) => n = 18.5hrs
therefore total duration is 18.5 + 4 = 22.5hrs
