pili and fimbriae are two different structures on the
bacterial cells.
although both are hairy like structures on the surface of
bacteria.
pili are found on the surface of Gram negetive bacteria and
fimbriae may also be present in certain Gram positive
bacteria and certain fungi like candida albicans.
secondly pili act as plasmid transfer bridge between the
two compitible bacteria, pili also act as receptors for
certain viruses. While fimbriae act as attachment organs to
the host cells.
thirdly pili contain specific proteins called pilins, while
fimbriae contain different proteins from pilin that are
called fimbrins.

Pili are hair-like structures on the externals of bacteria.
It has pillin, a proteinaceous substance and helps in
bacterial conjugation.
Fimbrae are also made up of hair-like structures that are
for attachment only and thus increases virulence. Made up of
the protein; fimbrin
They may all occur on gram negative bacteria with few
exceptions

Answer / r.rajani
The fimbriae are mainly associated with adhesive properties,
which enable the organisms to attach themselves to natural
substrates and to other individuals of their species.
