pili and fimbriae are two different structures on the
bacterial cells.
although both are hairy like structures on the surface of
bacteria.
pili are found on the surface of Gram negetive bacteria and
fimbriae may also be present in certain Gram positive
bacteria and certain fungi like candida albicans.
secondly pili act as plasmid transfer bridge between the
two compitible bacteria, pili also act as receptors for
certain viruses. While fimbriae act as attachment organs to
the host cells.
thirdly pili contain specific proteins called pilins, while
fimbriae contain different proteins from pilin that are
called fimbrins.
