oxygen and chlorine?

Answer / m. k. atal
Flourine is the highest electro-negative element in the
periodic table. It is more title held its outer most
electron than other elements, so its size or atomic radious
is smaller than oxygen and chlorine.

Answer / mazhar ullah jamro
because according to scietific reason those elements they
contain smaller atomic radius these are more
electronegative so flourine is more electro negative than
oxygen and chlorine

Answer / sana hasan
firstly have a look on atomic radius i.e
at.radius of oxygen is 66
at.radius of flourine is 64
at.radius of chlorine is 99.
flourine has smaller radius because it is more
electronegative.

Ok, people here, even though they are nice, only went to
highschool and will have you believe it's because of
"ELECTRONEGATIVITY" or give you the measurements but that's
just a lame since electronegativity is precisely a secondary
effect.
I'l be glad to explain why.
See, F has 9 protons, O has 8 and Cl has 17-- No
science there yet!!!
Now, Oxygen has configuration [He]2s2p4... so in orbital p
you have two electrons by themselves and one sharing with
another.
First of all, you have magnetic repulsion between the
electrons sharing the first p orbital, that makes them
uncomfortable and therefore you have spacy orbital.
Now, you'd be inclined to believe the same for F but, you
have one more proton, and you have to remember that protons
have an attraction effect over electrons so even though you
have repulsion, well, with one extra proton It's all just
bearable.
In the case of Chorine. It's preatty obvious, you have this
much larger nucleus (8 more protons then F) and the inner
electrons. not the valence but the ones before, that have a
screen effect over the nucleus preventing most attraction
from the nucleous to the valence electrons allowing the to
run free. That make it just plain fatter then F !
So don't be fooled by fools- as a real chemist.
