In AC supply frequency 50/60 Hz. DC motor can not run with good performance. it may produce harmonics

Dc motor cannot be run at good performance when powered by AC supply.. this will result in heavy core loss...
if you really wanted to use both ac or dc suppy for working a motor. you should prefer a universal motor. which is actually an AC series motor with some modifications.. .

The motor can rotate from forward and reverse direction depending upon the + and - cycles
