Because at no load, the only significant current component is Excitation current which is 90 degree out of phase with the supply voltage. Since pf = cos(@) and @ is around 90 here, power factor is very low.

The iron loss in a 100kva transformer is 1 kw and full load copper losses are 2 kw, then what is maximum efficiency occure at a load?
