During titration PySO3 can reacts with water,which varies from 1:1 to 2:1.
Py+SO3- + H2O -> C5H5NH + SO4H-
To prevent such side reaction Methanol is added.so it lowers the concentration of Py+SO3-.
CH3OH + Py+SO3- -> C5H5NHSO4CH3

Methanol is primary stanard. Most of the compounds soluble in methanol.
