Functional testing is important in SDLC. Since end user first criteria is his Application is working perfectly
second criteria goes to non functional testing and performance testing

All testing is very important - functional, non-functional, usability, performance, etc.
Ex: If the system works 100% in conformance with the customer requirements but is very slow, then the customer wouldn't be satisfied just because all their requirements are met.
