If you switch ON & OFF periodically like a sinosoidal there will be a deflection in ammeter(If it is a low voltage, less than 5V).

change in voltage will induces the EMF in the coil, so when we switch ON and OFF frequently there will be EMF induced and it will link with the secondary and there will be deflection in the ammeter. in case continously ON or continously OFF there will be no deflection.
