it basically depends on area of aplication suppose in dc
transmission line we are using cu cable but for same
voltage in ac transmission we require more cross sectional
area as there is skin effect and lossed are more. while in
simple circuit like lighting we can use same cu wire.

See it depends basically on application, if its simle pure
electrical circuit of lamp or heater then its simply the
amps that will decide whether you can use it or not
otherwise then type of cable comes into consideration like
their are different cables for power and controls like wise
you can clasify further.
