it is the extra ammountof air which is require for the
combustion of fuel in an engine because mixture of air and
fuel is not homogenous.

In combustion there are two types of air
1- Theoretical air :- the min amount of air that supplies
enough oxygen for complete combustion. The mixture in this
case is called stoichiometric.
2- Actual air:-is more than the theoretical air by the
value of excess air.
So excess air is the amount of air supplied over or above
the theoretical air.
EX. 150% theoretica air means that the actual air supplied
for combustion is 1.5 times the theoretical air. Also means
that there is 50% excess air and it also can be expressed
in terms of "excess air factor"=1.5
