GSM900:-serves larger area when compared to dcs-1800.
dcs-1800:- doesnt serve larger area when compared with gsm 900.

when comes to coverage & quality:

gsm900:- comes with good coverage and quality when compared
to dcs-1800.

dcs-1800: serves shorter distance.
