When load on turbines decreases, pressure valves are
closed. Therefore, water in the penstock increases
rapidly, due to this there is continous to and fro motion of
water in the penstock. This leads to great vibration of
penstock. This is known as WATER HAMMERING.

ASSUME A CLOSED VESSEL FILLED WITH WATER AND THAT VESSEL IS
CONTINUOUSLY HEATED SO THAT WATER GETS INTO STEAM. IF THERE
IS NO PATH TO ESCAPE THEN THE CONVERTED STEAM AT THE BOTTOM
FORCES THE WATER UP SO IT PRODUCES A HAMMERING FORCE ON THE
VESSEL.
