Why only 1ph,2ph,3ph supplies are universally used?? Why
not 4ph or 5ph??

When the generator is fitted with 3 windings equally spaced
at 120 degree, the resultant 3-ph electric power is 1.73
times the same electric power produced if you fit the
generator with one winding for the same rotation of the
machine. If we would add more windings the increase in
electrical power output will not yield a significant
increase in electric power to justify the cost of the
additional windings and the associated complexity of design.
So, it was universally agreed that fitting the generator
with three windings is the most economical solution and the
three phase power science was born from that point on ..

Answer / kcp
three phase supply only produce rotating magnetic field.then
only the operation occurs depending on electromagnetic
induction.and also if we use 4phase no. of conductors will
incresase and results in increased cost

Answer / deepak
in case of 4 phase ,phase difference will of 90 degree
whose resultant value leads to zero.
