what is different between cisco router and layer 3 switch..

Answer / jitendera sinha

if this one is the interview question in cisco then u have
to tell that switch it is ither l2 or l3 is best in lan

where as the routers are best in wan

now a much complex approch layer 3 Routing Versus Layer 3
Switching.
It is important to understand the difference between Layer.
3 routing and Layer 3 switching. Both terms are open to
some interpretation; however, the distinction between both
can perhaps be best explained by examining how an IP packet
is routed. The process of routing an IP packet can be
divided into two distinct processes:

Control plane—The control plane process is responsible for
building and maintaining the IP routing table, which
defines where an IP packet should be routed to based upon
the destination address of the packet, which is defined in
terms of a next hop IP address and the egress interface
that the next hop is reachable from. Layer 3 routing
generally refers to control plane operations.

Data plane—The data plane process is responsible for
actually routing an IP packet, based upon information
learned by the control plane. Whereas the control plane
defines where an IP packet should be routed to, the data
plane defines exactly how an IP packet should be routed.
This information includes the underlying Layer 2 addressing
required for the IP packet so that it reaches the next hop
destination, as well as other operations required on for IP
routing, such as decrementing the time-to-live (TTL) field
and recomputing the IP header checksum. Layer 3 switching
generally refers to data plane operations.

what is different between cisco router and layer 3 switch..

Answer / dharmendra kumar soni

1> L3 switches do not have WAN interfaces.
2> we can connect Ethernet circuits to a switch so you only
need a router.
3> As far as I know Call Manager Express does not run on a
switch but does on a router.
4>L3 Switch do switching at layer 3 by preserving the source
and destination mac.
5>router do normal routing lookup.
6>Switches doesnt support some QoS features.
7>Switches doesnt support NAT.
8>The forwarding packet on switches is done on ASIC
(Application Specific Integrated Circuits)
9>which is done in hardware rather than a software.
10>Forwarding packet on routers are done in a software.
11>router supports different WAN technologies unlike switches.
12>We can not implement routing on cisco layer switch.
13> We can not connect ISP directly to cisco layer 3 switch.

I think this is some main difference between router and switch.

Thanks,

what is different between cisco router and layer 3 switch..

Answer / johnny rajpal

Switch:- it is used when we connect more than one computer
for thier communication.Switch works on source MAC address.
Switch are of two types:-
1. unmanageable and
2.manageable

1.Unmanageable- In this we cannot manage it according to our
need. In this there is no operating System.

2. Manageable - this switch we can manage it according to
our need. Example - we configure password. we install
operating system in this switch.

Cisco router:- It is used for communication of two different
networks and give them best routing path for their
communication.
Example- ist n/w is 192.168.10.0 and
2nd n/w is 192.168.11.0

what is different between cisco router and layer 3 switch..

Answer / farhan

I guess the first answer of jitendra is the one
1. l3 switch :
Is the one which know where to route the packet , but don't
know to do additional feature or ooption. In simple word if
you are going to goa it says take this road you will reach
there.

2. Router:
Is the one which know where to route the packet and how to
route the packet. Have feature like nat, ttl decrementing,
divide broadcast domain, computing header checksum,
Multicasting of packet. In simple word if you are going to
goa it says take this road, take this train, you will reach
by this time and be well dressed.

12>We can not implement routing on cisco layer switch.(on l3
we can if it is intranet)
13> We can not connect ISP directly to cisco layer 3 switch.
we can connect if you are using rj45 conecter to the switch and have the range of public ip address)

ho dsopni what ever the point u have writen in the urs answer that can be stated as
