Near radiator. while the engine over heat the radiator
water expands and over flows. the over flow coolant water
stored in expansion tank near by radiator.
its placed just little bit of higher then radiator.
radiator cools water in expansion tank fall back to radiator.

you place the expansion tank on the suction side of the pump

Expansion tank is locaked at discharge side of Pump to
craate a constant pressure in the line.
