since the gain is calculated by the formula
20log|A|=20log|vout/vin| so, when A=0.707 or vout=70.7% of
vin then only we will get the gain as 20log|0.707|=
-3db. so,3db down point is 0.707 as at this point (i;e
0.707)we get the gain to be -3db which is 3db down to the
point zero where gain A=1(i;e 20log|1|=0).

ex in antenna charactristics,an for filter characteristics..
power at this 3db level is half..
and its value v used to calculate is 1/root2=.707
