My experience with electricity does not agree with the above answers. For years I have used a 1.5 sq. mm. Al service line for a load of at least 2 KW (ignoring the motor- based appliances whose initial current is much higher). This load required at least 9 amps. which came through the 1.5 sq. mm. Service line! Thus the 'thumb-rule' of multiplying sq. mm. by 1.5 to get the amperage in Aluminium cable is belied in the above instance given by me.
