what is difference between IR lamp and polarimeter lamp

IR lamp is called as GLOBAR and it will produce only IR rays.but in polarimeter two different lamps are used.one is sodium lamp and it will produce D-LINE Rays at 589nm and another one is mercury lamp and it will produce mercury line rays at 546nm.
