you have to assign a role to a user.YOu can add the role to
user in su01 OR you can add the user to role in pfcg.which
method is preferable?why?

Better You can use pfcg , because while assigning some role
through pfcg to a user a profile is automatically generated
which is adjusted with the user, later on you can assign the
same role or profile to a group or user.
If you try to assign a role manually through su01 , the role
wont generate a profile and the profile will not be adjusted
with user master data , in short it wont work out.
