Why do we use solid shafts for transfer of power in case of
pumps/ turbines & other machines why we use a hollow shaft
(pipe) in universal joints of automobiles; although the
rated load and twist is approx. the same?

Because rpm of pumps & turbines is too high & at that speed
hollow shaft posses & face more torsional force, so it will
bend. That's why we use solid shaft insted of hollow shafts.

becoz the torque transmitted by hollow shaft is more than
solid shaft.in automobiles the torque transmitted shd be
maximum thats why hollow shaft is preferred.

B'coz the hollow shaft can able to transmmite more torque
as comparing to solid shaft

Although the rated load and twist may be ~ the same, a "hollow shaft" (pipe) is used in universal joints of automobiles for several reasons. The "moment of inertia" of the entire section is reduced because of the fact that there is a decreased cross-sectional area. Pipe offers a high quality strength to weight ratio (Strong + Light Weight) which automobiles require to improve gas mileage. The deflection of a solid shaft compared to a pipe is insignificant, pipe offers a substantially larger tolerance of deflection.

solid shafts are used in pumps/tubine because of transverse
load/stress .but in atuomobiles only torque are to be
transferred .

This is bcoz in turbines there is uniform rpm in which the
shaft rotates except during starting and stopping whereas
in automobiles the rpm continuously changes and since
hollow shafts are used in automobiles

because at core point of shaft, shear stress is zero, and this
part does not play any role to take load.

in case of pipe joints we can't use solid shafts bcz in the
hollow shaft the liquid flows that,s why we cant use the
hollow shaft another thing is reducing the weight.
