debtors in the balance sheet and they are shown on the dr.
side of profit & loss a/c as expense.

It is debts instead of debits. The amount which is not
recoverable from debtors is called bad debts.And it has to
be eliminated from receivables by passing an adjusting entry
at the end of a financial year.
