when the core of the solenoid is cojusted or less than the
required area.as the windings are placed very closer the local
currents will diffuse with each other (or collide) which will
cause in production of the humming sound...this i had
personally experienced when i am preparing a solenoid core
transformer for my project....

The core vibrates at the frequency of supply and therefore
produces sound due to phenomenon of magnetostriction
