difference between antifriction bearing and journal bearing
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
Answer / anil kamat
Antifriction bearings have line or point contact whereas
journal bearings have surface contact.
Antifriction bearings are used for low load usage and
journal bearings are used for high load usage.

anti friction bearings are also called roller bearings
which is having a point contact hence it has less friction
as compared to journal bearing

Answer / abhimanyu dagla
dont get confused by term journal bearing. any bearing that
supports a shaft laterally is journal bearing.
anti friction bearings are of two major types:-
roller and ball bearing. the balls or cylinders contact area
bears the load. they are used up to DN number ( dia in mm
multiplied with rpm ) 5,00,000. above that hydrodynamic
bearings that use oil film to support load are used. Note
that journal bearing can be anti friction or hydrodynamic.
journal bearings support shaft laterally and take care of
lateral vibration. thrust bearings support shaft axially and
take care of axial displacement ( float).

journal bearings have higher friction factor as it has a surface contact(eg.solid bearing) whereas antifriction bearings have a point contact so less friction(eg.ball bearing)

Antifriction bearings are used to increase radial and axial load capacity of engine
Journal is the rotating part in bearing and used when load is light and motion is continuous
| Is This Answer Correct ? | 0 Yes | 1 No |
Answer / abhimanyu dagla
oh, i am sorry, antifriction bearings cant be journal bearing.
and the other two classifications are :- radial bearing and
thrust bearing.
up to DN number 500000, antifriction bearings are used,
after that hydrodynamic bearings are used.
