The main difference is cognos contains a predefined
functions.in BO's there is no predefined functions

Both Cognos & BO are Bussiness Intelligence Tools.
Basic difference is
COGNOS is for MOLAP and BO is for ROLAP.

In cognos we can create a single interface for multiple
databases.But in BOs,we can create single interface for
single database only

BO is a stand alone(thick client) BI tool whereas cognos
is web based tool(thin client), ODBC connections are to be
established for BO where as Cognos accesses the servers via
web. As a result of this BO occupies more space when
compared to Cognos but BO reports are faster(in getting the
results) when compared to Cognos.
Cognos- one list can be associated to only one query where
as in BO a single list can have qury items from multiple
data provider,
