if ac or dc what are the advantages and disadvantages?????

Answer / rocky
The overhead supply of the train is 25kv ac,single phase.
In earlier locomotives this ac supply was converted to dc
to run the DC Series Motor of locomotives.
But now a days, due to availability of IGBT converters &
speed controller drives, single phase induction motors are
being used. These single phase induction motors have better
efficiency and are more robust and maintenance free than
the DC Series motors, and so they are preferred choice for
locomotives these days

In addition to this , in AC motors, the 25kv ac supply is
first converted to dc ant then again converted to ac to
have a better speed control as we cannot control speed with
50hz supply.

Answer / ganesh.a
in india trains run on dc power and diesel,
trains can also be run in ac power.
eg: linear induction motor is used in high speed trains in
foreign countries which uses 3 phase ac power.
if ac
adv
no need of converter equipments
can be used for long distance with less cost
disadv
losses will be there
inductance, capacitance effect is there
more conductors needed
if dc
adv
losses wont be there
less no of conducters needed.
disadvan
it needs more cost for long distance
if there is a fault in on converter station
entire transmission will be affected.

the input given to the train in the form of dc
but alternator in train it will convert this 1500 v dc into 640 v ac . Siemens and X'Trapolis trains have 3 phase AC traction motors, best not to run them with DC.
