what is difference b/w squirrel cage rotor and wound rotor..

Answer / sachin

Squirrel cage winding is made up of copper bars connected at
two sides by end rings and placed on skewed rotor slots.
whereas in the wound rotor winding, typical copper winding
is placed in rotor circuit. No copper bars are used in wound
rotor winding.
The resistance of squirrel cage winding cannot be changed
externally whereas the resistance of wound rotor winding can
be changed by changing the resistance connected in star
fashion at slip-rings.

what is difference b/w squirrel cage rotor and wound rotor..

Answer / bhanu chaitanya

Describe difference between constrution of SLIPRING and
SQURREL cage motor.?
The windings on the rotor of a squirrel cage motor is
comprised of aluminum (or sometimes copper) bars embedded in
the steel laminations of the rotor. The ends of the rotor
bars are shorted together by rings at each end of the rotor.
There is no external electrical connection to the rotor. The
bar and ring structure looks like an exercise wheel for a
pet squirrel.

The rotor of a slip-ring motor is wound with wire coils. The
ends of the windings are connected to revolving joint so
that resistors or other circuitry can be inserted in series
with the rotor coils through carbon brushes that slide on
the slip-rings allowing an electrical connection with the
rotating coils.

That covers the difference in construction. Other details of
construction are essentially the same for both types of motor.

Edit 1
The above information refers to two types of induction
motors. Synchronous AC motors also have Pan Cake Slip Rings
through which the rotor winding is energized by a direct
current.

there is no such thing as a slipring motor. there is either
a squirreal cage or wound-rotor motor for induction
machines. is this wat u meant ? go here and follow the
references at the bottom of the page.

The slip ring is a form of squirrel cage motor

The Super Miniature Slip or wound rotor motor is an
induction machine where the rotor comprises a set of coils
that are terminated in sliprings to which external
impedances can be connected. The stator is the same as is
used with a standard squirrel cage motor.
