Ball Bearing are mainly used for light and medium radial loads and light axial load also. One of the races has to be fixed.

But in case of journal bearing, housing need not to be fixed, can take much higher radial loads, can not carry axial load.
Needs circulating lubricating agent,

journal bearings are fitted over some part of the shaft
used in machine..........
