Imagine that the distance from A to B is 20 miles (lowest
common denominator of 4 and 5)
That means on the way there it took him 5 hours (20/4)
On the way back it took him 4 hours (20/5)
So in total it took him 9 hours (5+4) to travel 40 miles (20
miles each way).
So 40/9 = 4.444mph
