Answer / prabhat patel
the function of piston rings are to provide clode tight
with cylinder.two piston rings are mounted in the piston.
one is upper piston ring and other is lower piston ring.
upper piston ring preventleakege of charge(a+f)from
cylinder to crankcase, while lower piston ring prevent the
leakege of oil from crankcase to cylinder.

Answer / sanjeev singh
the purpose of piston ring is to close tight air in
cylinder so that the air can not pass out side through
piston wall during the compression and expension.

Answer / neeraj
piston rings are used for the following purpose
1. to prevent the leakage of the highly compressed charge
from cylinder to crank case.
2. to provide lubrication from the oil rings.
3. contact area between rings and cylinder is minimum as
compare to piston and cylinder so it reduce the friction
becoz of minimum area of contact.
4. price of piston is much higher than the rings, so it
reduces the maintance cost of the engine.
