To limit the starting current.During starting the current will be 4-5 times more than that of the total current hence in order to limit the starting current the DOL starter is used

Absolutely there is no specific advantage if you are a
small user. for heavy industries it is advantageous coz of
less parts(contactors & timers) comparitive to Y/D
starter.for industries that dip when we start a motor using
DOL will take their grid or CPP ,where as for small users
they may not have such facility. so the flour mill users
will use Y/D stater to avoid sudden load on supply lines.

In ACS 1000 drive we are using 12 pulse converter,why don't use 3 pulse converter.
