Why is starter necessary for a three-phase induction motor?
Answer Posted / dhaval
1) The rotor of the three phase induction motor is act as a short circuit secondary while the stator winding is act as a primary winding of transformer.
2) Due to this, short circuited secondary, the current flowing through primary winding increases upto its 5 to 7 times the rated current for a few seconds.
3) Due to the increase in current, I2R losses are takes place in stator winding which results in overheating.
4) Similarly, it also reduces supply voltage at the time of starting.
5) Hence, in order to avoid this problems, starter is necessity for starting of induction motor.
