Its a tendency, habit or pastime to some & a peer pressure cultivated habit to others however the effects of over indulgence are a heavy price to pay as lung throat & pancreatic cancers.
Cultures, Etiquette, Mannerisms dictate the need or avoidance so saying this is a social evil requiring abstinence is misplacing the emphasis.
Smoking,Alcoholism,Narcotics Use all stem from the need to get a push,lift, stigma or a pure adrenaline rush hence more males may be prone to the same. Nevertheless,the harmful effects of smoking need not necessarily influence others as more statutory warnings are prevalent these days
