WHY WE NEED NEUTRAL FOR 3PH 400 OR 415 VOLTS POWER SUPPLY (4
WIRE SOURCE).
Answer Posted / wafiiq
We use 3PH 4 Wire system for secondary side (LV) side of
distribution transformers. The first 3 wires are the three
phases while the 4th wire is the neutral. Grounding the
neutral, a process known as system earthing, will allow
single phase users to have single phase supply from the
distribution transformer, i.e. nominal voltage 230V can be
obtained between any one phase and the neutral. Thus, by
grounding the neutral, we are making sure that it remains
at 0V, i.e. at the earth potential. As for 400V, is simply
the line voltage, between any two phases.
