In a Class 52% students has passed in Mathematics, 40%
students has passed in Physics, 17% students has passed in
both the subjects. So, how many percentage of students
hasn't passed in both the subjects?

Answer Posted / ustad

Anan is most definitely correct. You must read the
question carefully (even though the grammar is off -
probably someone from India fresh off the boat). "So how
many percentage of students hasn't passed in both the
subjects". You can interpret this as "What percentage of
students did not pass math and did not pass physics i.e)
failed ENTIRELY

So:
52% of the students passed in math. This percentage *may*
include those that also passed physics. Since we would like
to isolate those students who passed in math exclusively, we
subtract this percentage by 17 which represents those who
passed in BOTH. This leaves us with 35% who exclusively
passed in MATH ONLY.

We perform a similar operation to the physics portion and
subtract 40% from 17% which is 23%. This means 23% who
exclusively passed in PHYSICS ONLY.

Now to find out the percentage of students who have not
passed in BOTH is easy:
(those who passed in math ONLY) + (those who passed in
physics ONLY) + (those who passed in both)
= 35 + 23 + 17 = 75
So 75% of the class passed in either math, physics or BOTH.

So what is the percentage of student who have not passed
both subjects (basically failed completely)?
=(total percentage) - (those who passed in either math,
physics or both)
= 100 - 75
= 25
