The rating of any machine is given by its heat handling
capacity.Heat in a transformer is due to temperature rise
which is due to the power losses. These losses are constant
losses (core losses) and variable losses (copper
losses).Core losses are constant as they depend
proportionally on the system voltage which is
constant.Copper losses are variable as the load on the t/r
varies and hence the current varies. These two are
represented in VA rating which is apparent power.
