in case of earth fault current flows through body which is connected to earthing terminal which carries a current to earth if a person comes in contact with body in this case he will get shock. To reduce the intensity of shocks a minimum current should flow through a body and this is possible only when a max current will flow through earthing. To flow a max current resistance should minimum.resistance is minimum when cross section area will b large.thats why to increase cross section area earth point is larger.
