why we can not do direct nitration of aniline

Answer Posted / nsuresh_varma

Aniline is an amine and it has an active group - NH2 and it
is basic in nature. If it is not protected while nitration,
Nitric acid will react with NH2 to form a salt and / or it
will oxidize the NH2 to NO2. Therefore amine should be
protected b forming a salt before caring out Nitration.
