Why TAP changer provided in primary side of HT
transformer ? and why not in secondary?
Answer Posted / k. tivaganon
In theory, tap changer can be in any side of the
Transformer. Normally, for a step-down Tr., we put the tap
changer on the High Tension side due to many number of
turns of winding, in which we can tap easily. On the
contrary, if we put the tap changer on the Low Tension
side, there is not much turn of winding to use!!! For the
Distribution Tr., normally the tap changer will be NVTC- No
voltage tap changer. That is, no voltage no current go
through the tap during the change of tap position (There
will be no spark!!!!) For larger Power Tr., OLTC- On-Load
tap changer will be used. Tap will change position under
energized power.

If any HVDC line is going with positive & negative(the negative usually have return path of current with earthing electrode). Now the question is if this HVDC earthed electrode which is using as return path and earthed any nearby 400kv or 220kv AC substation equipments. which will be the impact of this on AC substation & its equipment, how severe may be this and what should be the minimum distance require between HVDC earthed electrode and AC substation equipments? It's really an high engineering level question...Dare to answer and increase your knowledge.
