Two CTs 1600/1 and 35/1 are in series. while checking the
ratio test of a CT(1600/1),same 1600A will also pass
through the CT having ratio 35/1.
Will it be harmfull to the ct(35/1),if yes , what will
happen.CT secondary is shorted
Answer Posted / ullas
if 1600 ampere current is passed through the second ct
having turn ratio 35/1 the definitely it will be
damaged.,since the ratio test equipment takes few seconds
to indicate the ratio error the condition will be worst .
no doubt.
each ct have certain burden value indicated on it as 10va,
15 va etc.
consider the case of 35/1 ct. hhaving burden 10VA.
this means while 35A is passing through the primary 1A is
produced in the secondary. and and this current can create
a potential up to 10V.
then calculate the value of secondary current curresponts
to 1600A primary current.
the primary of 35/1 ct is not designed to meet 1600A. so it
shall be burn out.
if we keep the two cts as series connected and 35/1 cts
secondary shorted. then also primary winding of the 35/1 ct
will not withstand with the 1600A.( it will simply act as a
conductor because there is no secondary.

What is the need of earthing transformer for delta side of a transformer. (Think of a line section between a star/delta transformer at a grid substation and delta/star transformer at a village. An earthing transformer is there at the delta side of the star/delta transformer at grid substation). As there are no ground reference there will not be fault current if a one phase is grounded. Further L-L phase will be sensed by the primary side of star/delta transformer as a L-G fault. So why an earthing transformer is required at delta side
