why is a avtomatic voltage regulator used for?

Answer Posted / blake australian engineer

An automatic voltage regulator, or AVR is used in a
generator to control the output voltage.
The AVR varies the excitation voltage (on the rotor) to
produce the desired voltage on the output terminals.

It is required because the excitation voltage changes as
the load (and power factor) change.
