what is the Function of beta-mercaptoethanol in cell
culture medium ?
Answer Posted / francois niyonsaba
To my knowledge, it is said that 2-ME is important for
lymphocyte or other cell cultures because the amino acid
cysteine is in short supply in FBS used in culture media,
while there is plenty of cystine. For example, T cells are
unable to transport cystine into the cytosol, where it must
be converted into cysteine. 2-ME reduces cystine into a
form that can be transported by the cells and is then
converted to cysteine needed for cell growth.
Another reason is that 2-ME, as a reducing agent, can break
down many of the toxic metabolites produced by cells in
culture thus improving the environment around the cells.
