an ice block submurged in the water, if the ice melt level
of water
Answer Posted / dhruv
Answer: The level of water will DECREASE after ice melts.
INTERESTINGLY, THIS DECREASE IN LEVEL WILL VARY LINEARLY
WITH INCREASE IN DENSITY OF THE FOREIGN OBJECT THAT IS
INTRODUCED INTO THE GLASS OF WATER (HREE THE FOREIGN OBJECT
IS ICE)
Explanation: Mass = Volume x Density
For a given mass, since water has density greater than that
of ice, ice will occupy more volume than water. So if an
ice cube of say, x gms. is placed in water, then the volume
of ice will be (x/1)c.c. (all quantities are expressed in
CGS units), whereas that of water, which will be formed
after ice melts, is (x/d)c.c. (where d is the density of
ice). Since d<1, (x/d) > (x/1), thus ice occupies more
volume than water having same mass.
V = pi*(r^2)*h = mass x density
As mass, pi and r are constants, h is directly proportional
to density
