Density = mass/volume
Transposing, volume*density = mass
Mass is constant for this system (no water or ice added or
subtracted)
So: volume1*density1 = volume2*density2
Or: volume2 = volume1*density1/density2
Since density1 is partially ice (which is less dense than
water), result of density1/density2 is less than 1 so
volume 2 is less.
Conversely, when a pipe freezes, the resultant increase in
volume can cause it to burst
