The base pressure can be calculated and it must be less
than the bearing capacity of soil. Based on the bearing
capacity of soil, the depth of foundation is decided in
case of general structures except for river bridges. But
one has to be careful about the strata below the founding
level. For river bridges, the founding depth decision is
tricky and normally two metres below the calculated scour
depth provided the strata has the bearing capacity more
than the base pressure.Raft foundation or box cell is not
preferred where the velocity of flow is more than
1.5m/sec. In case of shallow foundation including raft, the
length of rigid apron and cut off wall requires to be
determined carefully.

A 16 pile group, consisting of diameter concrete piles, were cast in situ in a clayey soil whose unconfined compressive strength is 1100 psf. Each pile is 60 ft long and the pile spacing is 2.5 times the pile diameter. The water table is at the ground surface and saturated unit weight of the clay is 118 lb/cu.ft. using a factor of safety 3 and a reduction factor =0.45, compute the allowable capacity of the piles acting as individuals
