I think being a Freelance Fashion Designer would be great.

does someone get started doing that? How do they get paid
for their work?

you send e mail to many companies your qualification and
experience: your interest and etc.

and make some new &
try to send some new developed design of yours with details

definitely if it is lovable and very unqiue they will give
you the chance to work
