A staging area is where data is processed before entering
into the data warehouse. You need to clean and process the
data before putting it into a warehouse. Cleansing means
removing extra spaces, deleting null values from primary
key columns, etc.

Yah its right.
Want to add some point in it.
Basically Staging Area is the mirror image of the warehouse.
And during this stage creation of FACT & DIMENSION table
comes into the picture.
Please let me know if any point is missing.

Staging Area disconnects the data from Real time OLTP applications. Since OLTP systems are burdened with transactions, to avoid the OLTP slow downs during processing it is important that we mirror image the OLTP database before we start data transformations(Cleaning & Conforming) for warehouse.

Adding few points
You can use stagin area for your transformation befor it
load it in DW. Also It could be de normalised way then
linked with Dimension to load Fact.

Staging area is the place where data is tested for its
correctness , dta is cleaned before it goes to warehouse.
simple live example:
water filter.

Its an intermidiate stage where data is put before its put
into the Datawarehouse database.It is also called
Operational Data Source(ODS).If a report is needed very
urgently though its not a nice one to have then we can
generate from the staging area or ODS.
Ex: if i am so hungry that i cannot wait until my food is
cooked i can have it though it does not taste good.but
because i am too hungry i would not mind that taste.later
once its cooked i can enjoy it much better.
that was just to give an understanding of the concept.
any one please correct me if i am wrong.

The staging area is used to travel the data between Source
sytem to Data wareshoue or datamart.
it should be important when we are extracting more than one
source sytem.
The staging will help us to do the cleansing and converting
the data to understaing the business team.
Bridge between source to data warehouse or Data mart.
